Irwan Serigar to spend a night at MACC lock-up

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah was arrested upon arrival at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters this afternoon.

MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operation) Datuk Seri Azam Baki today confirmed the arrest.

It was learnt that Irwan would spend the night in the MACC lock-up and would be taken to the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court to face his charges at 9am tomorrow.

Irwan was summoned by MACC to answer more questions about 1MDB’s dealings with International Petroleum Investment Co (IPIC).

MACC also summoned former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak for the same purpose.

However, Najib was not detained but he would be charged with criminal breach of trust tomorrow together with Irwan and former Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation (MEIO) chief Datuk Hasanah Abdul Hamid.

Earlier, Najib and Irwan arrived separately at the MACC headquarters to complete the final process of investigation.

Najib left the building at 5pm. Hasanah, meanwhile, was not at the headquarters but instead would straight away be charged tomorrow at 9am at the same court.

Hasanah was detained by MACC on Aug 28 on suspicion of abusing her power to make off with government monies which had been set aside for the 14th general election involving almost RM49.5 million.
