Spic-and-span Singapore, too, beset with monsoon rain floods

KUALA LUMPUR: Affluent, orderly Singapore has not been spared the monsoon rain chaos which has periodically struck the Klang Valley and other parts of Malaysia over the last two weeks.

An hours-long downpour on Sunday left several parts of the squeaky-clean island – including all lanes of the major Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway – inundated by floodwaters, The Straits Times reported.

The midday storm also led to drainage system water levels at the Sime Darby Centre, Alexandra Canal and elsewhere, rising to 90 per cent of capacity.

On Saturday, 100mm of rain was recorded at Bukit Panjang in just over an hour. The amount was equivalent to 40 per cent of the average monthly rainfall for Singapore in November, the Straits Times reported.

Saturday’s torrential rain also triggered flash floods in Choa Chu Kang and Bukit Batok in the west of the republic.
