Body found in abandoned boat cabin in Mersing

MERSING: The body of a man was discovered inside an abandoned boat cabin at Ah Liang Jetty, Endau, near here yesterday.

Mersing district police chief Superintendent Cyril Edward Nuing said passersby found the victim, believed to be in his 30s, lying face down with just a pair of jeans inside at about 3.15pm on Wednesday.

"We did not find any injuries on the body nor signs of struggle at the scene," he said, adding that the victim's body was starting to decompose.

"We believe the victim was a drug addict because we found drug-related items nearby. We did not find any identification documents on the body," he said in a statement here today.

Cyril said the body has been sent to the Mersing Hospital Forensic Unit for a post-mortem.

He also urged members of the public to come forward with any information on the victim's identity.

In a separate development, he said police arrested 37 men and two women aged between 17 and 40 over gambling-related offences.

He said a total of 80 raids were conducted by the Mersing Anti-Vice, Gambling and Secret Societies division (D7) since early this year.

"Police also seized RM74,349 in cash as well as gambling-related equipment.

"We are committed to eradicating all kinds of illegal gambling activities in Mersing," he said, adding that more raids and arrests would be made to curb illegal gambling.
