Sabah to conduct feasibility study on SESB

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah state government is still considering whether to acquire Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB), Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said today.

He said a body, which include Infrastructure Development Ministry and Public Works Department, would look into the details and conduct a feasibility study on the utility company, currently under Tenaga Nasional Berhad.

“I have met with Energy, Technology, Science, Climate Change and Environment Minister Yeo Bee Yin and her entourage last month where they proposed that the state government take over SESB.

“SESB has many liabilities and problems…(at the same time) state government is aware of the need to increase our capability to attract investors into the state by ensuring adequate labour, water supply and consistent electricity,” he said after the state assembly sitting today.

Shafie said he would look at the statistics and other options before submitting reports next year and would ensure a win-win situation for state and federal governments.

Meanwhile, the state government is hoping to invite more private sectors into the state to work on providing efficient and well-connected public transportation including buses and light-rail system.

“We need private sectors to support us as the state government has limited budget.” he added.
