Southern Link project vital to power stability in Sabah, says SESB chief executive officer

RANAU: The Southern Link project is crucial for the stability of electricity in the state, said Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) chief executive officer Mohd Yaakob Jaafar.

He said the project had to be implemented next year as two transmission line towers, T194 and T300, here had structural damage and needed repairs.

He said the Southern Link project was critical because about 200 megawatts (MW) of electricity in the east coast was currently supplied by the west coast of Sabah.

"At present, the only transmission line connecting the east coast to the west coast of Sabah is the 275-kilovolt Kolopis-Segaliud line," he said in a statement.

Yaakob said the Southern Link project would involve the construction of a 330km transmission line from Sipitang to Tenom and then to Kalabakan and Tawau.

If this project is implemented next year, it is expected to be completed by 2030.

Yaakob said SESB was awaiting the government's final decision on the implementation of the Southern Link project.

On the damage to the two transmission towers in Ranau, SESB is working on emergency restoration system (ERS) temporary towers.

The installation of the ERS was done in collaboration with Tenaga Nasional Bhd and the Sabah government, and would be completed soon.
