KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz today said he does not agree with ratifying the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).
But it does not mean that he will be joining the mass rally Pas plans to organise in the event the government signs the related treaties.
“ICERD is a no way (for me). (But) You can say no without doing all those things. That’s their thing,” said Nazri while speaking to reporters in Parliament here today.
“As a Malay Muslim I have rejected it from the beginning and I have never questioned the rights of others.”
“Can I accept it if my rights are taken away due to discrimination? The answer is no,” added the Barisan Nasional secretary-general.
The government recently announced its plans to ratify ICERD alongside five other UN treaties in the first quarter of next year.
Since then, many politicians including Cabinet members have expressed objections to the move following public backlash.
Last week, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said that various considerations have to be made before the treaties were ratified.
