Online bidding for vehicle registration numbers to begin early next year, says Loke

KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry is looking into setting up an online bidding system for vehicle registration numbers that is more dynamic, open and transparent.

Its minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook noted that it would be more convenient than the manual tender system.

“Among the advantages of the system is the public can see the bid prices through the system,” he said during the question and answer session at Dewan Rakyat today.

“In fact, they can increase their offer price based on the offer prices made by others.

“The winner (of the bid) will be announced and be visible to all bidders.

“The public will no longer need to go to the counter to submit their tender forms.”

Loke was answering a question from Ma’mun Sulaiman (Warisan-Kalabakan) on whether the Road Transport Department would create a new bidding system for vehicle registration numbers that was more transparent.

“The ministry will get advice from the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit, which has the capability in information technology,” he said.

“The study and setting up of the system is expected to be wrapped up within three to six months, and the ministry foresees that the system can be finished and ready for use by early next year.”
