PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Hamad al-Thani jointly inaugurated the anti-corruption stainless steel monument at Dataran Putra, here, today.

The monument was a gift from the government of Qatar to the prime minister and the people of Malaysia as a special acknowledgement for the strength shown in the fight against corruption.

The unveiling ceremony was also witnessed by members of the Qatari delegation and senior government officials.

The monument is in the shape of a lifted hand, representing the solidarity and efforts made by the international community in combating corruption.

The ceremony was in conjunction with Sheikh Tamim Hamad's three-day visit to Malaysia.

Situated near the Masjid Putra, here, the sculpture stands at a height of 12-metres, weighing some 3.2 tonne, and is made of anti-rust steel from China.

The sculpture is the third anti-corruption monument built as a testament to the fight against corruption.

The first sculpture was built in Geneva in 2016 and the second was in Vienna last year.

The steel sculpture was designed by Iraqi designer Ahmed al-Bharani.

Later, the Qatari Emir and Dr Mahathir will be attending and presenting the Sheikh Tamim Hamad Al Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award at the Putrajaya International Convention Center (PICC).

The award ceremony is organised by the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Center (ROLACC) in Doha, Qatar with the support of the United Nations' Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC). -- Reporting by Azura Abas, Hashini Kavishtri Kannan and Zanariah Mutalib
