Chew Jetty mural brings back fond memories

GEORGE TOWN: A mural, which depicts how a fisherman and his family would have spent their free time in the past is the latest tourist attraction at the Chew Jetty area here.

It took Singaporean Yip Yew Chong, 49, 10 hours to complete the mural last Sunday.

“This art piece tells of the life of the locals here in the past,” he said today.

“At the time, many of the men spent their time under the scorching sun working as fishermen, boat operators, workers at Penang Port and others.

“The women are shown doing household, chores while the young play in the sea.”

Chew Siew Pheng, the owner of the house where the mural was drawn, said: “The mural brings back fond memories.

“We chose Yip because this work is all about the every day lives and culture of the place, synonymous with the name of the premises — Folklore by the sea.”

The mural was launched by Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen.
