KUALA LUMPUR: This is a tale about makeup that you just couldn’t MAKE UP.
A popular Malaysian makeup artist, vlogger and hijab designer has left netizens practically questioning reality with an Instagram video in which she casually reveals that her appearance is enhanced by more than just powder and pigments. Much, much more.
The roughly 58-second clip, shot in sped-up mode, was first uploaded on Aug 30, but gained insane traction on Friday, Dec 14 when it was shared by horrified Twitter user Bonita Neetasweeta, who bewailed that “makeup has… gotten out of hand.”
Bonita’s originally-shared video has garnered a jaw-dropping 3.5 MILLION views in just two days.
The footage opens with Aqirazlah – who could be mistaken for a hijabi Rihanna – mugging prettily for the camera, in full makeup. The fantasy begins to fade when she openly yawns at the camera, before carefully removing her thick false eyelashes.
Terror strikes shortly after when Aqirazlah sticks the tip of an eyeliner pencil into the bridge of her nose, which immediately gives way, bending to the side before detaching completely from her face. Yes, it appears that she had been wearing a prosthetic nose.
The reverse-transformation continues with Aqirazlah’s removal of two lengths of adhesive tape from under her chin, which seem to have given her face more definition.
Without letting viewers catch their breaths, she then removes contact lenses from her eyes with the ends of two cotton buds – and reveals that the colour of her peepers are dark brown, not green.
Next, she uses cleanser-soaked cotton pads to thoroughly remove her thick foundation, face powder, lipstick, eyeliner and brow-liner – to reveal a complexion several shades darker than it had originally appeared.
With all the makeup subterfuge stripped away, what remains is the perfectly lovely, vibrant face of a young Malay woman. But after posing coyly for the camera, au naturel, Aqirazlah delivers her piece de resistance – she flashes a goofy (but also creepy) smile which reveals a mouth burgeoning with braces.
Despite her attempt at spooking netizens with her supposedly ‘plain’ unvarnished appearance, commenters were almost unanimous in declaring Aqirazlah a natural beauty. Poster after poster said that she doesn’t need her makeup tricks to look pretty.
