Gerakan slams DAP over failure to abolish road tolls

GEORGE TOWN: Gerakan is taking DAP to task over its failure to deliver on its promise to abolish road tolls.

Gerakan deputy president Oh Tong Keong said the party welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to freeze toll hikes for next year.

But, he pointed out that DAP had promised to abolish road tolls as long as 10 years ago.

He was referring to the Sungai Nyior toll which DAP had campaigned on prior to the 2008 General Elections.

“DAP leaders promised that after taking power they would abolish the Sungai Nyior toll. However, they gave the excuse that because they had not been able to win Putrajaya, they were unable to do so,” he said today.

“However, since DAP is now part of the ruling Pakatan Harapan coalition, why have not they fulfilled this promise?

“The people are disappointed that, despite ruling for more than seven months, DAP leaders have failed to fulfil their promise that was made more than 10 years ago.

“This will stir questions in the people’s minds. Did DAP take their votes for a ride and when will they finally implement their promise.”

Oh said this was not the only promise that DAP had not kept.

He said DAP had been asking for local government elections in the previous election campaigns.

Oh said the party gave the excuse that they were unable to do so with Putrajaya under Barisan Nasional.

“But now they have come up with another excuse of wanting to prevent race-related conflict and strife to justify their continued refusal to implement local government elections.

“I want to ask the DAP, if such excuses are not aimed at hoodwinking the people, then what is the intention?”
