All is well in Langkawi

LANGKAWI: All is well in Langkawi despite reports predicting strong winds and heavy rain will hit the popular tourist island as a result of the tropical Pabuk storm.

A Langkawi chapter Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) spokesman said as of today, there was no cases reported involving untoward incidents and accidents caused by the weather.

“Langkawi APM is on standby and we have stationed our men patrolling along the beaches since yesterday.

“The situation is under control and there were no cases of rough seas as well strong winds. The weather seems to be fine.

“Nevertheless, we will continue monitor the situation until the yellow stage warning issued by the Meteorological Department has been lifted,” he said.

The Langkawi Tourism Association, he said, have also instructed the cancellation of tourist activities involving Tasik Dayang Bunting pending the weather situation to avoid unnecessary accidents.

Penang Meteorological Department director Ling Leong Kwok said the tropical storm, which is likely to hit the east coast of the peninsula, will not strike the island head-one and that it will only face the side effects.

Ling said Langkawi as the island is located on the fringe of the Pabuk tropical storm, which is some 200km north.

“Far for it to impact Langkawi,” he was quoted as saying in the report published by the New Straits Times yesterday.

It was also reported that there was no cancellation of ferry services from Kuala Kedah, Kedah and Kuala Perlis, Perlis to Langkawi.
