Coconut tree falls on trio in Langkawi, killing one

LANGKAWI: A man was killed and two other people injured when a coconut tree was uprooted by strong winds in Pantai Chenang and fell on them Wednesday night.

Muhammad Sukri Koto Alwi, 24, died at the scene in the 11am incident.

The injured, identified as Chong Win Ken, 26, and 24-year-old Yong Shui Tian, are receiving treatment at Langkawi Hospital (HL).

District police chief Superintendent Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said several people witnessed the incident.

“Police received a call informing us that a coconut tree in front of Mali-Mali Beach Resort, beside the Kalut Cafe and Bar in Pantai Chenang, had been uprooted and fell on some people.

“When the policemen despatched to the scene arrived, they found that there were three victims, one of whom was already dead. The injured were sent to HL for treatment,” he said.

A six-second video clip showing people trying to assist Sukri has since gone viral on social media.
