GEORGE TOWN: Penang Mufti Datuk Seri Dr Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor urged the state government and Penang Island City Council to explain a ‘cross’ sign at Grace Residence in Jelutong here.
He said the matter could be solved amicably if all parties were willing to be tolerant of each other.
“I am of the opinion that this must be handled carefully and wisely according to existing legal avenues.
“The authorities must investigate if it was done purposely or it was a coincidence.
“I am requesting the state government, through the Deputy Chief Minister 1’s office, to get the developer to change the location of the lights so that it does not appear as a cross sign when lit, as several parties have objected,” he said in a statement today.
He also advised the people to be mindful of their acts to ensure they do not disrupt the harmony in a multiracial society.
He also highlighted that the Federal Constitution forbids any form of effort to promote or preach other religion to Muslims.
“Some matters cannot be only resolved through anger, and must be tackled wisely using proper channels,” he added.
Several images went viral in social media about a cross sign in Jelutong which was displayed at a new apartment here recently.
Some netizens even claimed that it was the largest cross sign in the world.
However it turned out that it was not a cross sign but only a series of lights which when lit appeared as a cross sign.
