Family of fireman killed in temple riots wants fair inquest

ALOR STAR: The family of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim, who died of injuries sustained when he was set upon during the temple riots in Subang last year, want a fair inquest into his death, free of any disturbances.

His 63-year-old father, Mohd Kassim Abdul Hamid, said the family has been informed that the inquest is being held to ascertain the exact cause of death of his second child.

“I hope for justice for my son... I hope everything goes smoothly without any problems, or interference from any party. There is no father in the world who would have been happy with what happened and my family can only accept fate and hope for justice,” he said when met at the family home in Kampung Tebengau, here.

Earlier, Tunku Tenmenggong Kedah and Sultanah Bahiyah Foundation chairman Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah spent 30 minutes with the family to offer her condolences and hand over a donation to ease their burden and sadness.

Recently, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim had said police had completed investigations into Adib’s death and had submitted the investigation papers to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.

The Shah Alam court had much earlier set this Friday for case management of the inquest into the cause of death. It is to be held at the Coroner’s Court at the Shah Alam court complex.

This followed a request from Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for the attorney-general to order the magistrate’s court to carry out an inquest into the death.

Adib, a 24-year-old Emergency Medical Response Service (EMRS) unit member based at the fire station in Subang, was reported to have been assaulted by a group of men when he and his colleagues responded to reports of burning vehicles outside the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in USJ 25, Subang Jaya on Nov 27.

He was rushed to hospital, then later transferred to the National Heart Institute.

Though he showed signs of improving, his condition suddenly took a turn for the worse and he died on Dec 17.
