No benefit in sensationalising Penang 'cross' building incident: Mujahid

KUALA LUMPUR: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa said the viralled incident of a Penang building’s façade’s briefly lit up to form a giant cross symbol should not be sensationalised.

“This is a sensitive issue and currently, the state government and developer (of the building) are working together to resolve the issue amicably,” he said.

Mujahid added that Penang Mufti Datuk Seri Dr Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor and Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow have both commented at length about how the issue should not be blown out of proportion.

“This is a Penang issue and both the chief minister and mufti have already provided appropriate comments on the matter.

“For the federal government, we do not want people to sensationalise the issue and make people angry. We do not want this, as we want the parties to resolve the issue peacefully,” he said.

Mujahid was speaking at a press conference after launching the Federal Territory Mosque’s Economic and Prosperity Congress at the Wilayah Persekutuan Mosque here, this morning.

Recently, Penang Mufti Wan Salim said that the cross incident is a sensitive matter, but that he has full confidence in the state government to resolve the issue with the developer.

“We should not make matters worse, as it can affect the harmony between the various communities here,” said Wan Salim.

Meanwhile, Chow said he is still awaiting a report from the developers, but stressed that the lights at the building in Jelutong no longer forms a cross when they are switched on.

“We are still awaiting the official response from the developer, but this matter can and should be settled amicably,” he said.

An image of the Grace Residence’s façade featuring lights forming a giant cross went viral recently, and caused displeasure among non-Christian residents in the area which saw the symbol as a Christian crucifix.
