Police identifies car driver in Penang accident [NSTTV]

GEORGE TOWN: The driver of the white SUV that plunged off the Penang Bridge early this morning has been identified as Moey Yun Peng, 20, a student at a private college here.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said this followed a missing person report lodged by a man at the district police headquarters here about 5pm today.

He said the man claimed that his son had failed to return home and was believed to be the driver of the car that crashed and plunged into the sea.

“The father said he received information from his son’s friends that the latter was involved in an accident and had plunged into the sea,” he said.

Nik Ros Azhan said three independent witnesses and two of Moey’s friends had come forward to assist in investigations.

“We have recorded all five statements, and the victim’s friends admitted that he was involved in an accident while returning home from a birthday party here.

“An independent witness had also shared video recording from his car’s dashcam to assist in the investigation,” he said.

The case has since been classified under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Earlier today, it was reported that an accident involving two cars on the Penang Bridge caused one of the vehicles to crash through the guard rail and plunge into the sea.

The accident took place at 2.30am at Km4 of the bridge, in the direction of the mainland.

When rescuers arrived at the scene, they found a heavily damaged Toyota Vios, while witnesses said the other car had fallen into the sea.

The 21-year-old driver of the Toyota Vios sustained injuries and is being treated at the Seberang Jaya Hospital.
