Penang Bridge fatal crash: Netizens call for stern action against teen driver, owner of car

GEORGE TOWN: Netizens have called for stern action against the underage driver who was involved in the fatal crash which killed a motorcyclist and his female pillion rider on the Penang Bridge here early yesterday morning.

They also said that stern action should be taken against the owner of the car, who had allowed the 16-year-old to use the vehicle.

Quik WK said the laws should be amended as it was too lenient.

"Too many accident cases involving underage drivers," Quik said.

Siong Kai Chen said the teen driver should be tried as an adult.

"Time to tighten the leash. Both underage driver and the car owner should be taken into account.

"No penalty can compensate the lives loss," Siong said.

Azmir Osman asked whose car the teen driver was using during the fatal craah.

He said the owner (of the car) should be punished, just like a motorbike rode by kids below 16.

Ahmad Mahmood said 16-year-old was driving without a driving licence and insurance coverage.

"That's unforgivable," he stressed.

Frens Bull Infinity asked if this was another case of underage driving their parent car.

"So sad to hear both innocent people were killed by a silly person's mistake!" he said.

It was reported that a motorcyclist and his female pillion rider died in a fatal crash with a car, which was driven by a 16-year-old, at Km1.9 of the Penang Bridge early yesterday morning.

The 2.30am incident involved three vehicles - a motorcycle, a car and a lorry.

The motorcyclist and his pillion rider, in their early 20s, died at the scene due to severe injuries. The pair are believed to be on their way home after having a meal at Bayan Lepas.

The teen driver escaped with minor injuries while the lorry driver escaped unhurt.

Initial investigation revealed the crash happened when a car heading towards the mainland from the island is believed to have rear-ended a lorry, causing it to lose control.

The car then crashed into the motorcycle, causing the motorcyclist and the pillion rider to be thrown off the machine and succumb to their injuries at the scene.

The teen driver, who is still in school, is believed to have driven his mother's car. He was returning home in Bukit Mertajam after meeting a friend on the island.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Tan Cheng San said today that the teen driver was driving without a licence.

"We have only obtained a one-day remand order against the driver," he said.
