Cameron Highlands: Senior PH leaders to hit the ground for final three days of campaign

CAMERON HIGHLANDS: The last three days of campaigning which kicks-off today in the run-up to the Cameron Highlands by-election will see the presence of senior leaders from Pakatan Harapan (PH) hitting the ground in a bid to ensure victory is on their side.

PKR President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to be in Cameron Highlands later today, focusing on voters in the Tanah Rata state constituency.

The Port Dickson Member of Parliament is expected to meet the Orang Asli voters at Kampung Sungai Ruil in Tanah Rata, this afternoon.

The former deputy prime minister will then join other leaders from the coalition at a "Ceramah Perdana" (talk) which will kick-off in Tanah Rata later this evening.

Another PKR leader who will make her campaign rounds today is Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

The Women, Family and Community Development Minister has several events lined up in the Jelai state constituency and will kick off her events with a get together programme in Tanjung Gahai.

She will also be at an another programme with the Orang Asli community, which will see the participation of Tok Batins as well.

Apart from Anwar and Wan Azizah, other PH leaders expected to be present at the talk are Finance Minister and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng; DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang and Pahang PKR Chief and Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Fuziah Salleh.

The Cameron Highlands parliamentary constituency comprises the state seats of Jelai and Tanah Rata.

For the record, in the 14th General Election (GE14) on May 9 last year, the Tanah Rata polling district which houses the Cameron Highlands administration center, was won by PH with a relatively small majority compared to the votes garnered by Barisan Nasional (BN) and PAS.

PH, represented by the current by-election candidate M. Manogaran in the May 9 polls, received 1,083 votes, surpassing the 714 votes garnered by BN and PAS’ 244 votes.

Meanwhile, in the Jelai state constituency, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yasin is scheduled to attend a series of two-day campaign programs from Thursday onwards.

He is scheduled to attend a meet the people programme as well as launch an Understand the Quran programme, to be held at Kampung Kuala Medang.

Muhyiddin who is also the Home Minister, will also go down to the ground to meet voters at the day market in Kuala Medang, as well as attend several meetings involving the PH election machinery in Sungai Koyan.

Meanwhile, Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) President Mohamad Sabu already made his campaign rounds at two voting districts in Jelai earlier this week.

The Kuala Medang voting district is considered to be a BN stronghold, whereas the Felda Sungai Koyan Satu voting district is deemed a PAS stronghold.

The highlight on the last day of campaigning this Friday will be the visit of Prime Minister and PH chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to Jelai, to meet voters.

Dr Mahathir is expected to attend two programmes – one involving the Orang Asli community at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Pos Betau and the other at Felda Sungai Koyan Satu.

Both voting districts were previously won by BN and PAS respectively.
