Works minister says landslide-hit area in Cameron Highlands not under dept supervision

CAMERON HIGHLANDS: The route and location of the landslide incident which occurred at Kampung Batu 59, Kampung Raja here early today is not under the supervision of the Public Works Department (PWD).

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said that he had received a report from the PWD and was informed that the landslide had hit a house, killing a man while four others were still missing.

"I am deeply saddened by the landslide incident that was reported earlier today in Cameron Highlands.

"The search and rescue operations are being actively conducted by authorities involving the firemen, police and the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM).

"Checks found that the route and location of the incident were not under the supervision of PWD," he said in his statement posted on his social media platforms today.

Alexander said that however,the PWD also assisted in the operation, especially clearing works at the entrance to the incident area to facilitate the operations.

"The PWD will continue to monitor the situation and be ready to channel whatever assistance is needed within the capacity of this department.

"I would like to advise all parties to be careful and obey the instructions of the authorities for the sake of mutual safety," he said.

Earlier it was reported that one man died while four others are feared to have been buried alive following a landslide early today.

Pahang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant director (Operations) Ismail Abdul Ghani said the department received a distress call at 2.51am, and so far, the search and rescue operation is still ongoing.

A statement from the Cameron Highlands District Disaster Management Agency Committee said that all the victims were from Myanmar.

They have been identified as Shing Lan Har, 56; Shing Aung, 39; Om Myue, 38; Haphey, 36 and Thang Moung, 25.
