Newly married couple killed in Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi house fire

SEPANG: A newly-married couple was killed in a blaze at a terrace house in Taman Desa Vista, Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi, this afternoon.

The two National Registration Department (NRD) staff members were identified as Wan Mohd Baharul Nizam Wan Bakar, 35 and Norwahidah Abdul Hamid, 28.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Aziz Ali said a police motorcycle unit rushed to the scene upon receiving a distress call at 2pm followed by fire fighters from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

He said rescuers had to forced open the fence and the sliding door as the house was locked from the inside.

"The male victim was found in the bathroom while the female victim was found on the bed, with burn marks on her face and waist, in the master bedroom."

He said initial checks showed only the master bedroom was badly damaged by the fire and that investigators were still trying to ascertain how the fire had started.

"The bodies of both victims have been sent to the Serdang Hospital for post mortem." he said.

KLIA Fire and Rescue Department chief Khairuddin Jamaludin said the fire was successfully extinguished at around 2.40pm.

When found, both victims were not breathing and medical officer from the Health Ministry confirmed their death at the scene.

"The fire did not destroy the entire house, just the main bedroom. We are still investigating the cause of the fire and will check for possible element of mischief and others." he said.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported that the couple had just rented the house in January and was planning to hold 'bersanding' ceremonies in Kangar, Perlis on Feb 2 (the bride's side) and in Jerteh, Terengganu on Feb 6.
