Newborn dumped near Kamunting surau in good health

IPOH: Medical checks on a newborn baby discovered abandoned in a box in front of a surau in Kamunting, yesterday, have revealed that he is healthy.

The baby boy, whose umbilical cord was still attached when found, is now being monitored at Taiping Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Perak Criminal Investigation Department deputy chief (Investigation and Legislation) Superintendent Datin Seri Halimahton Ahmad said in a statement today.

Meanwhile, police are stepping up efforts to trace the infant’s parents.

The newborn was discovered at 4.35pm by Lance Corporal Nurul Kamal, who was patrolling Kampung Pinang Seberang at the time.

The baby, which had been placed at the entrance to the village’s Surau Nur Iman, was wrapped in a piece of cloth.

Acting Taiping district police chief Superintendent Razlan Abdul Hamid said that Nurul immediately contacted the Kamunting police station upon making the discovery.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for exposure and abandonment of a child under 12 years of age.
