Global Peace Mission Malaysia hands aid to displaced persons in Sana'a

SANA'A: About 75 families placed at an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in the outskirts of Sana'a received food aid from Global Peace Mission (GPM) Malaysia here, today.

The aid, handed over by the head of the #PeduliYaman mission chief, Syahrir Azfar Saleh, 32, comprised 50 kg of wheat flour, 10 kg of sugar, 10 kg of Basmati rice, 12 cans of beans and 4 litres of vegetable oil, which is enough to last them about a month.

"We have managed to help 75 families, while there 120 of them based here. So there are some who did not receive the aid. After this we will increase our efforts so that aid can be extended to more families in need," Syahrir told the Bernama News Channel (Astro 502).

Syahrir added that GPM had handed over mattresses and blankets to 50 refugee families in another location nearby Sana'a. It is estimated that more than two million people from the regions of Hudaidah Saadah, Hajjah and Tamamah have taken refuge in Sana'a.

Meanwhile, several of those placed at the camp expressed their gratitude over the aid.

"All of us here thank Malaysia for this assistance," said Muhammad Mansur Abdullah, who is from Hudaidah.

"Thank you for helping us," said Muhammad Saed, who hails from Taiz.

"Malaysia has provided much help to the poor and refugees. We are very grateful!", said Mohammad Matar, who is also placed at the camp located near the largest waste collection centre in Sana'a.

Apart from the stench of rubbish, the thin material their tents are made of is unable to keep the victims warm from current temperatures of around 16 degrees Celcius.

GPM Malaysia is working with local NGO Sanid Organisation to provide aid to the affected families here. — BERNAMA
