MAINPP to sue over 'blatant lies' regarding Tanah Wakaf Abdul Cauder eviction

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Islamic Religious Council (MAINPP) is contemplating taking legal action against several parties who spread incorrect information over the the eviction of people from Tanah Wakaf Masjid Abdul Cauder recently.

Its chairman Datuk Abdul Malik Abul Kassim said he was aware of the misleading information spread to the people to paint a bad picture about the council and he believed the person responsible should be held accountable in court.

He said the council had identified a number of people including those in the Semenyih by-election who use it as a platform to spread the lies.

“They are blatant lies, not exaggerating the issues but saying blatant lies.

“They claimed that MAINPP demolishes Malay lands, spin the facts, and slander us. So we are looking into taking legal action against them,” he said at a press conference today.

A total of 19 households had received eviction notices for the land on which MAINPP intends to develop low-medium cost apartments.

Each household will be given a free unit when the blocks are completed. However, some of the residents initially refused to leave, until they were finally told to do so by Feb 24.

As compensation, MAINPP will give RM500 each month to pay for rent pending completion of the project. For interested parties, MAINPP also has a list of homes that the people can live in temporarily.

Apart from the RM500 rental reimbursement, the residents are given a one-off payment of RM4,000 moving-out allowance and a RM3,500 moving-in allowance.

Meanwhile, the proposed first Shariah Compliance Hospital project, dubbed Hospital Islam Pulau Pinang (HIPP) to be built here in Bayan Baru will finally take off soon. The construction of the 200 bed hospital costs up to RM250 million.

“The approval was obtained from MBPP (Penang Island City Council) last July 17 and we expect the project to be completed by the year 2022.

“The main focus of HIPP are the zakat recipients (needy) and provide the best possible treatment. We will allocate 20 beds for the asnaf for treatment,” he said.
