Stall's new 'ubi tonyoh cheese' a hit among locals in Wakaf Mempelam

KUALA TERENGGANU: The creative idea of a trader in Wakaf Mempelam here, combining 'ubi tonyoh' (grated yam) with cheese, has been received well, especially among children.

Offering three flavours– ubi tonyoh cheese with strawberry, chocolate, and caramel– the dish has become a preferred choice for buyers visiting her stall.

Trader Sulizawati Sulong, 39, mentioned that these three menu items were only introduced last week with the aim of attracting the attention of children.

"We know that yam-based food is usually less favoured among children and is more synonymous with adults. However, when combined with cheese and presented in various colours, it can attract them to try. Alhamdulillah, since its introduction, this menu has received a positive response from buyers who want to buy it for their children," she said when met at her stall in Wakaf Mempelam.

According to the mother of two, besides ubi tonyoh cheese, she also sells other yam-based dishes such as 'puli ubi' (yam dumplings), 'sira ubi' (yam dessert), boiled yam, and yam porridge, which are sought after by food enthusiasts every time the yam season arrives.

She has been selling since last November, and her stall operates every day from 10.30am to 3.30 pm, with each dish priced at RM5, except for ubi tonyoh cheese, which is sold for RM10.

She said that around 100kg of yam is used daily to produce yam-based menu items.

"We know that yam-based dishes are synonymous with the yam season and are sought after by enthusiasts. Alhamdulillah, it helps businesses like ours to add income to some extent," said the mother of two.
