No intention to shut down, monitor war-based games, says MCMC

CYBERJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is neither keeping tabs nor shutting down war-based games as of now.

MCMC chairman Al-Ishsal Ishak said this in response to discussions going around in the media on the matter.

"My short answer is no. We are not monitoring or stopping war-based games for as long as the content is within the provision of the laws.

"If their content is against the law, only then will we take action," he said after the first Royal Malaysian Police-MCMC Cyber Crime Committee meeting today.

Last Friday, Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said violent online games such as PlayerUnknown’s Battleground (PUBG) should not be blamed for extremist acts.

He said extremists would carry out acts of violence with or without exposure to online games.

The minister said this when asked whether the government would ban online games with violent elements such as PUBG following what happened at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand which saw 50 people killed.

In a statement issued today by MCMC, the commission said it had contacted all social media platforms to take down any video of the Christchurch shooting.

It would also continue to monitor the spread of such videos on the Internet.

On March 15, the man who carried out the attacks in New Zealand live streamed the shooting incident for about 17 minutes on Facebook as he gunned down worshippers at the two mosques in Christchurch.
