Former MIC veep Balakrishnan killed in accident near Kulai

KUALA LUMPUR: Former MIC vice-president Tan Sri S. Balakrishnan was killed, along with three others, in a three-vehicle accident at KM33 of the North-South Expressway (NSE) near Kulai, Johor early this morning.

Balakrishnan, 65, who served as MIC vice-president from 2013 until 2015, died at the scene due to severe head injuries. The three others are identified as G. Ravi, 55, A. Ragu, 57, and K. Ramachandran, 51.

Kulai investigating officer Inspector Sharul Hafizu Abd Wahab stated in a police report that the incident at 12.10am this morning occurred when a lorry on the opposite direction lost control, hit the divider and crashed into the Toyota Vellfire that Balakrishnan was travelling in.

The driver of the Vellfire suffered chest injury and has been sent to Kulai Hospital for treatment. Two other passengers in the Vellfire escaped unhurt.

Another vehicle, a Proton Wira driven by Wan Imran Riduan Wan Ibrahim, 40, did not manage to avoid the collision on time and crashed into the Vellfire.

Wan Imran Riduan and the unidentified lorry driver are said to be safe.

All the bodies have been sent to Kulai Hospital for post-mortem and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
