Woman critical after helmet attack near Penang mall

GEORGE TOWN: A 37-year-old woman is fighting for her life after a suspected drunk motorcyclist hit her on the head with a helmet near Queensbay Mall, here, Saturday night.

Police sources told the New Strait Times that the woman, identified as K. Surinder Kaur Bedi, sustained serious head injuries from the blow and doctors at the Penang Hospital, where she is currently being treated, gave her a 50-50 chance of survival.

The source said a witness told the police that he spotted a man, in his 50s, hurling a crash helmet at the woman at Persiaran Bayan Indah at 11.50pm on Saturday.

“We are not sure what prompted the act as the victim is still unconscious. The 55-year-old suspect, however, appeared drunk when arrested,” the source said when contacted.

The source added that the suspect also has a long list of criminal record but declined to elaborate.

“Police will seek a seven-day remand order on the suspect.

“We will also be recording more statements and check the closed circuit television camera footage of the crime scene,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon, which carries a jail term of not more than 20 years, fine or whipping.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Che Zaimani Che Awang when contacted has confirmed the case.
