ECRL not a trade-off for finding Jho Low, says PM

PUTRAJAYA: Reviving the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project following the signing of a supplementary agreement with China is not part of any deal to get hold of fugitive Malaysian businessman Low Taek Jho or Jho Low.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said there was no trade-off with China when it came to the agreement for the project.

However, he did admit that Malaysia would seek help from the Chinese government if it was proven that Jho Low was in that country.

"This (supplementary agreement) has nothing to do with Mr Jho Low. Of course, we will seek the help of the Chinese government if at all he is in China," Dr Mahathir told reporters during a press conference on the ECRL at the Prime Minister's Office here.

Low is a central figure in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal, is wanted in Malaysia, Singapore and several other countries. He is believed to be currently hiding either in China or the United Arab Emirates.

He has been placed on Interpol's Red Notice since October 2016.
