Man sleeping on Beaufort track killed by train

BEAUFORT: A man was found dead on the railway track at KM15 of the Beaufort-Tanjung Aru stretch, here, this morning.

Police said the victim, known as Totoh, in his 20s, was sleeping on the tracks when he was killed.

District police chief Deputy Superintendent Azmir Abd Razak said the train was heading towards Tanjung Aru station, from Beaufort station in the 5am incident.

"It was travelling at 35km per hour. The driver said he spotted an ‘object’ on the tracks but could not make out what it was because it was too dark.

“As the train got closer, the driver immediately applied the emergency brake after realising someone was sleeping on the tracks but it was too late."

Azmir said the victim died on the spot due to serious head injuries.

He added that the victim's body was taken to the Beufort Hospital for post-mortem.

"He did not carry any documentation. We suspect he could be a glue sniffer and had somehow fallen asleep on the track.” he said.
