RM2m allocation for bus stop, market in Perlis

KANGAR: The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) has approved RM1 million for the construction of a new bus stop and another RM1 million to restore and upgrade the Sena market in Perlis.

Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin said a better bus stop was needed to meet current needs, as Perlis had many institutions of higher learning, including modern religious education centres.

“For this purpose, I have approved a sum of RM1 million,” he told reporters after a meeting with heads of departments and agencies under the KPKT’s auspices at the State Legislative Assembly Complex here today.

“This is in support of the state government’s approach to encourage tourists going to Thailand or Langkawi to stop or spend the night here, before starting their journey again.

“This in a way will help revive the economic activities of the people in Perlis.”

She also urged the relevant departments and agencies to ensure that road signs and directions were installed properly, so as not to confuse the public, especially foreign tourists.

On another issue, Zuraida said the relocation of the main market in Sena wasnecessary to avoid competing head on with the existing wholesale market.

“The KPKT is ready to allocate RM1 million to upgrade or refurbish the existing market,” she added.

In a discussion with Perlis Chief Minister Datuk Seri Azlan Man earlier, she said she had also asked the Perlis government to look into and identify a suitable housing model and mechanism to be implemented to meet the needs of people in the state.

She said her ministry would evaluate the implementation system before giving assistance.

Zuraida said in their discussion, Azlan had mentioned a housing model priced at RM30,000 for poor people who had land, especially the B40 group who did not have a fixed income.
