KOTA KINABALU: Election watchdog Sabah Bersih 2.0 has reminded candidates contesting in the Sandakan parliamentary by-election to observe ethics and laws.
Its vice chairperson Beverly Joeman said a Pemantau or a group of seven observers would be monitoring the election from the start of Nomination Day on Saturday.
"As in the 14th general election, we will be monitoring political parties, candidates, groups or any individuals involved in election campaigns, for possible wrongdoings.
"If they are found to commit any offences, we will report them to the authorities and Election Commission for further action," she said at a press conference here.
Also present was Sabah Bersih 2.0 coordinator Asraf Sharafi.
Beverly added that the group would be observing common offences such as bribery and vote-buying, offering meals or goodies, misusing government assets, intimidation, violence and disturbances, as well as campaigning on voting day.
"We also would like to take this opportunity to remind all election machinery to abide by the Election Offences Act 1954 when campaigning.
"We would also remind the rulling government party not to abuse government property and use inappropriate influence during the campaign," she added.
As the by-election will be held in the fasting month, Beverly also reminded candidates that they should not make any campaigning gestures during the breaking of fast functions, or giving away bubur lambuk, as it would be considered an offence.
She added the same goes on voting day, no one should do any forms of campaigning including postings on social media.

The Sandakan by-election is to be held on May 11 following the death of incumbent Sabah DAP chief Datuk Stephen Wong last month.
