Education dept to probe video of two pupils being caned

PORT DICKSON: The Negeri Sembilan Education Department (JPNS) is investigating a video clip showing two students being caned by their teachers, that went viral on Facebook yesterday.

The incident was said to have happened at a Tamil national school here.

JPNS director Datuk Pkharuddin Ghazali said his department and the Port Dickson District Education Office (PPD) were still investigating the incident for further action.

"Officers from the Education Department have already gone to the school to get detailed information on the incident and to investigate further. Based on preliminary investigations, the incident was due to disciplinary problems.

"We view the matter seriously and will take appropriate action, including on those who recorded and circulated the video on social media. It should not have happened," he said when contacted today.

The 38-second footage showed the two being caned in front of other students in the school hall.

The video was then believed to have been uploaded by parents who were unhappy with the teachers’ action, and had since garnered 1,000 views.

But many netizens also blamed the administration which had uploaded the video and those who shared it because they considered it the duty of teachers to educate and discipline their students.
