SJKT Sungai Ara, model school for sustainable development goals

BAYAN LEPAS: SJKT Sungai Ara's efforts to instill United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in its various school activities has earned it a recognition from the Education Ministry.

Its Minister Dr Maszlee Malik said the school could serve as a model for all educational institutions in the country on how to emphasise happiness, care and respect, while at the same time maintaining a green school atmosphere.

The school has its own mini farm, where it produces fruits and vegetables.

The farm is used in the teaching of Science subject to the students, while generating revenue from the harvested crops.

The school also did not emphasise on homework, giving more time for students to enjoy the real school environment.

Maszlee said numerous environmental activities were organised in the school, making everyday schooling experience more fun.

“The 21th century classroom environment is also visible here even though the size of the school is small.

"Parents’ testimonies also revealed that their children loved to spend time here rather than returning home straight after the school session.

"This school should serve as a model to all other schools on how a fun learning environment can be achieved, while emphasising on conserving nature." he said during a visit to the school here today.

The school also shared its activities with students from Sekolah Agama Sungai Ara, located next door.

"Even though they are different educational streams, they still carry out activities together," he added.

Maszlee also announced a special allocation of RM20,000 for the maintenance of the school while Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) and Institut Terjemahan & Buku Malaysia (ITBM) contributed RM4,000 worth of books for the school's resource centre.
