Coffee, with a cendol twist

ALOR GAJAH: A stall selling coffee cendol at the Ramadan bazaar in Masjid Tanah Ria has been drawing the crowd from the first day of the fasting month.

Customers stop at the 'Kupi Sojuk Atok Kayo' stall run by Nur Suria Abdul Haziz to check out how coffee mixed with cendol tastes.

Nur Suria, 30, said she started the business with help from husband Mohd Shahrizul Mohd Kaus, 39, and their children, with only a jar of coffee.

"As this is our first time selling at the bazaar, we decided to start small, with only one jar. However we also offer free cendol and ice cream as additional flavours.

"We never expected that by the second week of Ramadan, customers will grow in numbers, including repeat buyers. Now we have to prepare up to five jars, at least," she said when met at her stall yesterday.

Nur Suria said a jar of coffee can make at least 40 packs or 40 cups of coffee.

She said most of those who visit the stall like the taste of coffee cendol because it is 'unique' and offers a new drinking experience.

According to Nur Suria, she decided to start the business to contribute to the family income as her husband does not earn much as a lorry driver.

She added her first attempt was very encouraging.

"Before this, I was selling drinks on a small basis beginning February last year. I then became an agent for Kupi Sojuk, and business has been good since.

College student, Zahin Muqri, 21, said he became hooked on coffee cendol from the first day he tasted it.

"The coffee tastes like no other. After the first time, you’d crave for it," he added.

Army man Mohd Qalus Nazri, 35, said he took time to visit the bazaar during a short holiday at his hometown in Masjid Tanah, just to enjoy the unique taste.

"This coffee cendol has the potential to go far," he added.
