20 road fatalities on 1st day of 'Raya'

KUALA LUMPUR: Twenty people were killed in road accidents on the first day of Aidilfitri yesterday, just eight days into Op Selamat 15.

Bukit Aman's corporate communications head Datuk Asmawati Ahmad said since the launch of 'Op Selamat 15' road safety operation on May 29, police have recorded a total of 13,316 accidents involving 18,854 vehicles.

Fatalities numbered 140 as of yesterday (June 6).

“Yesterday, four fatalities were reported in Kedah, Perak and Johor, three in Selangor, two in Pahang and one each in Negri Sembilan, Kelantan and Sabah,” she said in a statement here.

According to the statement, from May 29 till yesterday, 2,385 road safety operations were conducted with 182,755 summonses issued for various traffic offences.

Meanwhile, as for break-in (houses and buildings), she said 334 cases were reported throughout the country over the same eight-day period.

Op Selamat 15, which ends on June 12, focuses on six major offences namely driving on the emergency lane, overtaking on double lines, using hand phones not, queue jumping, speeding and beating traffic lights. — BERNAMA
