Wisma Putra will assist 6 detained in Indonesia

KUANTAN: The Malaysian Embassy officials in Indonesia will get in touch with the six Malaysians who were arrested in connection with alleged drug smuggling activities on a luxury yacht in Jakarta on June 4.

Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said he has been briefed about the arrest conducted by the Indonesian authorities and has instructed the Malaysian Embassy to provide the necessary assistance.

"When Malaysians are arrested in a foreign country, it is important that we respect the respective country's laws and legal proceeding before any further discussions.

"Our embassy officials will have to adhere to the standard operating procedures before trying to meet them (those arrested) and do the necessary... for example, offer legal services," he told reporters when met at the Indera Mahkota parliamentary constituency Aidilfitri open house, here, today.

Saifuddin, who is also the Indera Mahkota member of parliament, was commenting on the arrest of six Malaysians – one from Perak and the rest from Johor – who were nabbed on suspicion of drug smuggling.

It was reported that the yacht, believed to have sailed from Johor on June 4 for Jakarta, docked at the Batavia Sunda Kelapa Pier in North Jakarta.

Police raided the vessel based on a tip-off on the same day and allegedly recovered 37kg of syabu.

The drug is believed to have been brought from Myanmar.
