Four more Orang Asli bodies found

GUA MUSANG: Four more bodies of Batek tribe members from Kampung Kuala Koh were found by police today.

District police chief Superintendent Mohd Taufik Maidin said police, however, had yet to identify the bodies, all of which were found on trees.

He said the latest find brings to eight the number of bodies found, leaving four more unaccounted for.

“The teams involved in the operation will resume searching for the remaining four bodies tomorrow. We have identified their location including one who was buried on the other side of the village.

“The team will use a boat and cross Lebir river to locate the body,” he said when met.

He said some of those involved in the operation codenamed “Op Batek” had to walk between 15 minutes and three hours before they discovered the bodies.

Taufik said police today had to exhume the body of Batek tribesman Romin Hamdan, 29, who was suspected to have died of pneumonia on May 29.

“The body was exhumed to enable a second post-mortem to be carried to determine the real cause of his death. The body was sent to Gua Musang hospital about 3.30pm,” he said, adding that police were expected to exhume another body soon.

Meanwhile, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Senator P. Waytha Moorthy, who paid a short visit to the village this evening, said the situation at Kuala Koh at the moment was under control.

“All the Orang Asli in the village have been given enough food supplies as well as other necessities. At the moment, the government feels there is no need for them to be evacuated as we worry they might not be comfortable staying in other places,” he said.
