Man shot by Kedah traffic cop after friend runs red light

ALOR STAR: A 21-year-old man was shot in the arm by a traffic policemen in Jalan Langgar, here, Wednesday.

In the 10.15am incident, Mohd Alif Anuar was riding pillion on his 22-year-old friend, Zulhilmi Azri's motorcycle and heading towards their workplace in Alor Mengkudu from Kuala Kedah.

The victim's mother Hashimah Mahmood, 49, claimed a policeman, who tried to stop the youths for beating the red light, fired a shot and hit his son.

“My son is now in the red zone at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital after sustaining serious injury on his arm and will have to undergo surgery tonight (Wednesday) to remove the bullet.

“He is conscious and told me that he had asked Zulhilmi to stop the motorcycle but he rode on because he did not have a motorcycle licence," she told reporters when met.

Meanwhile, Kedah police chief Datuk Mat Kasim Karim confirmed receiving a report on the incident. The policeman involved, however, has not lodged any report.

“It's possible that he had fired a shot to stop the motorcycle but the action was ignored.

“If the policeman was acting against the law, the victims can take civil action against the force." he said in a statement late Wednesday.

It was understood that Kedah police chief Datuk Zainuddin Yaacob would issue a statement on the matter today. -- BERNAMA
