Trio on cycling expedition to mosques in the peninsula

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Three friends from Penang have started a cycling expedition to visit all the mosques in Peninsular Malaysia, which would cover a total distance of 2,248km.

Cycling enthusiasts Zainuddin Zakaria, 39, Mohd Alif Azri, 30, and Amsyar Faiz Sharudin, 26, hope to complete the journey in 14 days.

Leader Zainuddin, who harboured an ambition of cycling to Makkah one day, said the mosque expedition was a good start.

He said most of the cost were borne by them, besides contributions from friends, and food and drinks by locals in every state that they visit.

“We feel that the ‘Tour De Mosque’ programme is useful as we can help the community in the vicinity of every mosque and spread the beauty of Islam,” he said before starting the journey at Masjid Timah in Permatang Pauh here yesterday.

Their first destination is Padang Besar, Perlis, before heading for the east coast and south.

Zainuddin said they chose mosques as stopovers because they wanted to get more Mus-lims to frequent the house of worship.

“All proceeds from the sale of expedition shirts will be channelled to the mosque fund.”

After the Tour De Mosque expedition, they plan to cycle to Chiang Rai, Thailand, later this year and to Borneo next year.
