'We're so used to Alor Gajah floods'

ALOR GAJAH: ‘This is one of the worst floods in five years. We have gotten so used to this situation — wading through water to save our lives and property, as well as manage cleaning up the house after the flood,’ said Norizan Naim, 52.

She said yesterday’s flood rose to about 1.2m high, and was among the fastest to rise in her 30 years of living in Kampung Belimbing Dalam, Durian Tunggal, here.

The last flood that hit her home was in November last year, which was 1.5m high, she added.

The clerk said following heavy rains from 4am yesterday, she alerted her husband and their four children, aged between 15 and 23, to take precautions as the water level was rising fast.

Her daughter, Erni Natasha Jamil, 23, said based on previous floods, she knew the water would rise as it was raining non-stop for an hour since 4am yesterday.

“When this happens, the river behind our house will overflow and flood the lowland areas,” she said.

The college student at Seremban Teachers’ Teacher Institute said every year, villagers were not spared from the floods.

The worst floods were during the end of 2014 and early 2016, when most victims were unable to return home for a week.

Erni, who had returned home on Saturday, said she would make use of the break to help her mother clean up the house, as well as remove the dirt and mud left by floodwaters.
