MACC has received report of corruption in Kuala Koh Orang Asli settlement

KOTA BARU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has received a report on possible corruption or wrongdoings occurring at the Orang Asli settlement in Kuala Koh in Gua Musang.

However, its chief commissioner Latheefa Koya said no investigation paper had been opened so far, though the commission “is thoroughly looking into the report”.

“What I can confirm here is that MACC has received a report but I cannot reveal or discuss the case further as it might jeopardise on-going investigations and the intelligence work that is being carried out.

“We (MACC) have not opened any investigation paper and I also cannot reveal whether the report was on the mining activities or whether it was lodged by the Orang Asli,” she told reporters after paying a courtesy visit on Kelantan State Secretary Datuk Nazran Muhammad at the Darulnaim Complex.

Asked about corruption cases in Kelantan, she said MACC was not a clearing house or public relations agency.

“We will carry out investigations once we receive reports, no matter which state government it involves, and will take action on every angle and level.

“Today, during the meeting with the state secretary, we also discussed methods to prevent corruption. The state government has promised to give its full cooperation to prevent scandals and other wrongdoings,” she said.

The Kuala Koh Bateq settlement in Gua Musang came into the limelight for all the wrong reasons recently when 15 members of the tribe died over a short space of time. Following the deaths, several police reports were lodged by certain quarters claiming that the death was due to river pollution.

The deaths were suspected to be due to a measles outbreak but only some cases were confirmed as the bodies of the others were too badly decomposed by the time they were exhumed and post-mortem examinations were carried out.
