Brother, villagers join SAR for missing tourist guide

MIRI: The brother of a missing local tourist guide and nearby villagers have joined in efforts to locate 20-year-old Roviezal Robin.

Roviezal and a 66-year-old Dutch tourist Peter Hans went missing after flash floods struck the Deer Cave at the Mulu National park here on Friday evening.

Miri and rescue chief Law Poh Kiong said 12 firemen, 35 villagers, 20 staff from the national park and police personnel were divided into five teams and kicked off their search and rescue (SAR) mission at 8.30am today.

"The weather is clear this morning and two teams are using the water surface searching method, along the river in the cave system.

The remaining three teams are deployed, focusing on Sungai Gua, Sungai Paku as well as ditches and cracks," he said.

The SAR for Roviezal was called off at 3.22pm on Saturday due to a heavy downpour at the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Hans was found dead on Saturday.

It was believed he was swept away by the strong river current in the cave and subsequently drowned.
