Parties urged to field more young candidates in next GE

KUALA LUMPUR: Political parties are urged to field more young candidates in the next general election in line with the passing of the constitutional amendment to lower the voting age from 21 to 18 in Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

Malaysian Youth Council (MBM) president Jufitri Joha also called on non-governmental organisations and political parties to create education modules to nurture and educate the youth on civil education, democracy and issues concerning nationalism.

“It is also in line with the global #NotTooYoungToRun campaign, which is also endorsed and supported by the council,” Jufitri said in a statement today.

He said the council had its own version of political school and would be launching MBM political school version 2.0 soon.

“The council would like to call on the youth to use this opportunity by equipping themselves with knowledge and skills related to the democratic practice in the country.

“This will help to hasten the maturity process to determine future leaders of the country,” he said.

The council also proposed for the Election Commission to conduct redelineation exercise to address issues related to malapportionment of parliamentary constituencies especially in the urban areas which may arise from the automatic voter registration.
