Man feared drowned during waterfall outing with friends

BENTONG: A man is feared drowned after being swept away by strong currents at the popular Chamang Waterfall here.

In the 7.15pm incident yesterday, the victim Wan Khairul Amirin Rojiham, 25, was swimming with three friends when he drifted away.

District Fire and Rescue Station head Zainal Abidin Nong Chik said the four friends from Selangor had gone to the waterfall at about 5pm before entering the water at about 6.30pm.

“Wan Khairul Amirin was suddenly swept away by the strong currents. His three friends tried to help but lost sight of the victim as he was pushed downstream.

“Upon being alerted, the department deployed a team to the scene to search along the waterfall stretch.

“The team later sought help from the authorities to shut down the Chamang Dam until the water was knee-high to make it easier for search and rescue operations," he said, adding that the missing victim was an e-hailing driver from Selangor.

Zainal Abidin said the SAR operations involving 11 firemen, seven policemen, three Civil Defence Force personnel and seven volunteer firemen from Perting ended at 10.10pm. It resumed at 8am today.
