Thunderstorm warning issued for Peninsular Msia

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Peninsular Malaysia, today.

The advisory, issued at 9.15am, said heavy rain and strong winds are expected until 12 noon.

The affected states are Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak (Kerian, Larut, Matang, Selama, Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar and Manjung).

Inclement weather is also expected to hit Pahang (Bera), Selangor (Sepang), Negri Sembilan (Seremban, Port Dickson, Kuala Pilah, Rembau, Jempol and Tampin), Melaka and Johor (Tangkak, Segamat, Muar, Batu Pahat and Pontian).

Last Friday night, destructive torrential rain and high winds lashed northern states in the peninsula, causing widespread damage and casualties.

MetMalaysia director-general Jailan Simon attributed the severe weather to Typhoon Lekima. He said that the typhoon’s storm line had stretched into southern Thailand, which brought about the damaging thunderstorm.

Lekima – the ninth typhoon to form in the western Pacific so far this year – strengthened into a super typhoon late on Wednesday.
