Road tax renewal for 2,000cc and above at Sarawak post offices suspended

KUCHING: Vehicle owners with engine capacity of 2,000cc and above can no longer renew their road tax at the post offices throughout Sarawak, starting tomorrow (Sept 1).

State's Road Transport Director Mohd Syafiq Anas Abdullah said his department has issued the instruction to suspend the renewal services although he could not reveal the reason.

“Vehicles with 2,000cc engine capacity such as four-wheel-drive and luxury vehicles have to come to our offices to renew their road tax.

“But, vehicles below 2,000cc are not affected,” he told reporters after flagging of the Merdeka Ride at the JPJ headquarters, Jalan Kuching-Serian here today.

Mohd Syafid added that the Transport Ministry is expected to make an official announcement on the move with further details and reasons of the suspension.

He declined to comment if it was one of the steps taken to detect vehicle owners in Peninsular Malaysia who renew their road tax here due to the cheaper rates.

It was learnt that the services would discontinue at all post offices in Sarawak, Sabah, Langkawi and Labuan.

Meanwhile, the Merdeka Ride saw over 100 riders riding from the JPJ headquarters here to Telok Melano, located about 200km away.

The event was aimed at celebrating the National Day and promoting road safety and responsible driving behaviour among the motorists and road users.
