Malaysians can now renew driving licence, road tax via MyJPJ app starting Feb 1 [UPDATED]

SHAH ALAM: Starting Feb 1, Malaysians can renew their driving licence and road tax using the Road Transport Department's (RTD) MyJPJ app.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said those who opted for a digital driving licence would get a rebate of RM5 upon renewal, until Dec 31.

He said the new function would make it easier for the public to renew their driving licence and road tax digitally, saving time and cost, besides reducing the congestion of physical transactions at RTD counters.

"This initiative is only for Malaysian citizens and does not apply to foreign nationals or any pass, long-term permit, MyKAS Card or MyPR Card holders," he told a press conference after his working visit to Selangor's RTD here today.

Loke said that based on a study conducted last year, the department found an increase in the number of drivers and owners who opted for digital platforms.

Loke said as of Dec 31 (last year), a total of 7.5 million users have downloaded the MyJPJ application since it was launched in February (last year).

Meanwhile, Loke said that drivers and vehicle owners who are not yet ready during the interim digitisation period this year can still choose a physical driving licence and road tax.

"For adjustment purposes in the interim period, the RTD will issue a new and standardised physical driving licence and road tax.

"The production of physical driving licence and road tax will be in the form of a security paper.

"Previously, the driving licence was in the form of a plastic card, while the road tax was in the form of a disk sticker," he said, adding that the use of the security paper would begin after the existing stock of plastic card for driving licence and disk sticker road tax ran out.

Loke added the new road tax did not need to be attached or displayed on the vehicle mirror, as required by Section 20(1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987 before.

"This road tax security slip is not mandatory and aims to give time to those who still need to adapt to the digital system."

Loke, however, reminded that enforcement action would be carried out against any party who drives a vehicle without having a valid driving licence and road tax, in accordance with the provisions under the Road Transport Act 1987 and the rules under it.
