Muhyiddin to meet Dong Zong on Johor chapter deregistration

PUTRAJAYA: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is scheduled to meet representatives of Dong Zong (United Chinese School Committees’ Association of Malaysia) tomorrow.

The Home Minister said this in response to reports regarding the deregistration of the association's Johor chapter by the Registrar of Societies (RoS).

"I have been told it is more of an administrative issue," he told reporters after the ministry's monthly gathering, here, today.

Dong Zong’s central committee member Low Chee Chong was reported as saying that the group had received a letter dated Aug 8 from the Johor RoS director on Aug 20, notifying them of the deregistration.

The deregistration comes after the chapter's 60 years of operations.

In a statement on Tuesday, Dong Zong said it would appeal against the decision and discuss the matter with the Home Minister.

It was reported Dong Zong was unable to give a satisfactory explanation to the RoS over the repeated changes of its constitution, which led to its deregistration.

Muhyiddin also said the ministry had no issues regarding Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik's upcoming visit to Melaka to attend congregational prayers this Saturday.

"I have been informed he will not hold a talk with the congregation there.

"We will not control him (Zakir) 100 per cent (to the extent that he) cannot do anything. If he wants to pray at the mosque, no one can be barred from doing so," he added.

Melaka police had confirmed that Zakir was free to attend a congregational prayer, despite being banned from public speaking events in the state.
