Eye infection, URTI cases increase in Nilai

SEREMBAN: The Negeri Sembilan Health Department is monitoring cases of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI), eye infections, and asthma attacks in the state following the current haze situation.

State Health, Environment, Cooperatives and Consumerism Committee chairman S. Veerapan in a statement today said there had been a 33 per cent increase of eye infection cases recorded at the Nilai Health Clinic over the same period last week.

"In the case of URTI, there is an increase of 28.5 per cent, while asthma cases have not shown an increase so far," he stated.

Veerapan added that monitoring in hospitals and health clinics in Port Dickson so far has not shown any increase in cases of eye infections, URTI and asthma.

He said the Health Department would continue to monitor the three haze-related diseases following the Air Pollution (API) readings that continue to hover at very unhealthy levels.

“The public, especially children, the elderly and those with heart diseases, need to reduce activities that expose them to the haze.

"If you still need to go out, use the N95 mask, while those with symptoms of cough, colds, asthma, eye pain and lung infections are advised to seek immediate treatment," he added. - BH
